Dermatologist Dr Lauren Knight spoke recently about Vitamin C serums and why Your Face benefits from including one in your skincare routine. Vitamin C is a very popular antioxidant and with many forms and derivatives available, it is important to understand exactly what it is you are putting onto your skin.
Vitamin C can improve your skin’s overall condition, helping with anti-ageing, brightening, plumping and pigmentation. During the course of a day, skin is exposed to a number of pollutants; smoke, UV radiation, general radiation and blue light. These exposures generate free radicals which are unpaired electrons that wreak havoc on cells, they cause cellular damage and give rise to premature ageing, pigmentation and poor skin health. Vitamin C, an antioxidant, mops up these free radicals, limiting their ability to damage the cells.
Vitamin C in many of its forms is highly unstable and needs to be formulated in a very specific way. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a highly effective, stable form of Vitamin C, it’s gentle on the skin and is suitable for all skin types.
It is ideal to use your Vitamin C in the morning as it protects skin from the exposures it faces during the course of a day. Used at night it helps to repair the damage done. It can be used in either, or both your morning and evening routine.
On a clean face, 2-3 drops of Vitamin C serum can be dispensed and gently pressed onto your face. Once it is absorbed, continue with either other serums or complete your routine with a moisturizer and an SPF.
